BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will be back on the court Sunday at 10 a.m. for an ACC match against No. 62 Maryland. The contest will be played at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
Virginia Tech (7-3), ranked No. 22 in the latest ITA national poll, rolled to a 5-2 win over No. 25 Nebraska on Wednesday by winning five of the six singles matches. Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 67 nationally in singles, is 8-2 in dual matches this season, including wins over three nationally ranked players. Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 51, has wins over two top-20 players and five victories over nationally ranked opponents. Sebastien Jacques (Magog, Quebec, Canada), entered the national rankings this week at No. 107 and is returning to form after suffering an injury earlier in the season.
Maryland (13-2), ranked No. 62, has won nine straight matches and is off to the best start since the 1986 season. The Terrapins are led by 124th-ranked Tommy Laine, a freshman with a 15-0 singles record to open his collegiate career. Before facing the Hokies, Maryland will play at No. 1 Virginia on Friday.
Tech is 4-1 against Maryland in ACC regular season matches since entering the conference in 2005. The Hokies defeated the Terrapins, 4-0, last year in the first round of the ACC Championships in Cary, N.C.
Following Sunday’s match, Tech will face two critical home matches against No. 20 Florida State on Friday, March 26, at 2:30 p.m. and No. 45 Miami on Sunday, March 28 at noon.
