BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team returns to action on Saturday with an 11 a.m. match in Richmond, Va., against Southern Methodist. The contest will be played at the Thalhimer Tennis center on the Virginia Commonwealth University campus.
Virginia Tech (5-3), ranked No. 21 in the latest ITA national poll, has dropped its last two matches against No. 1 Virginia (6-1) and at No. 14 Louisville (5-2).
The Hokies will be led by 47th-ranked Yoann Re, a senior from Verdun, Quebec, Canada, a 2009 All-ACC selection and 2009 NCAA participant. Re has had an outstanding dual match season thus far, posting wins over No. 8 Eric Quigley (Kentucky) and No. 16 Bruno Rosa (Rice). The Hokies will also have No. 71 Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), the 2009 ACC Freshman of the Year.
Southern Methodist (7-7) lost, 5-2, Thursday afternoon at Virginia Commonwealth. The Mustangs are led by current Conference USA Player of the Week and 99th-ranked Artem Baradach.
Tech and SMU last met during the 2008 season, also in Richmond, Va., with the Hokies winning, 5-2.
Following Saturday’s match, Tech will host No. 36 Nebraska on Wednesday, March 17, at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
