BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team returns to action on Wednesday with a 2:30 p.m. match at No. 14 Louisville. The contest will be played at the Bass-Rudd Center on the University of Louisville campus.
Virginia Tech (5-2) is ranked No. 21 in the latest ITA national poll. Wednesday’s match will be the first for the Hokies since suffering a 6-1 home loss to No. 1 Virginia on Feb. 23.
The Hokies will be led by 47th-ranked Yoann Re, a senior from Verdun, Quebec, Canada, a 2009 All-ACC selection and 2009 NCAA participant. Re has had an outstanding dual match season thus far, posting wins over No. 8 Eric Quigley (Kentucky) and No. 16 Bruno Rosa (Rice). The Hokies will also have No. 71 Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), the 2009 ACC Freshman of the Year.
Louisville (12-3) split two matches last week falling, 5-2, at No. 3 Ohio State, before bouncing back with a, 5-2, win over No. 34 Northwestern. The Cardinals are led by 34th-ranked Austen Childs and Simon Childs, who is ranked No. 54 nationally. The duo are also ranked No. 18 nationally in doubles. Chidi Gabriel, ranked No. 122, will also provide depth to the Louisville lineup.
Tech’s Sebastien Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada), defeated Austen Childs, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, in his first match of the fall season at the UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational in Charlottesville, Va.
The Hokies and Cardinals have met for the last nine seasons with the home team winning each match. Tech won last year’s meeting, 5-2, in Blacksburg.
Following Wednesday’s match, Tech will travel to Richmond, Va., for an 11 a.m., Saturday contest against Southern Methodist.
