Tech falls to No. 1 Virginia, 6-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Top-ranked Virginia overcame losing the doubles point to rally with six singles wins in defeating Virginia Tech, 6-1, Tuesday evening at a packed Burrow-Burleson Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improved to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC, while Tech fell to 5-2 and 1-1 in league play. The win extended Virginia’s winning streak over ACC opposition (including postseason) to 50 straight matches.

Tech, ranked No. 18 nationally, which is the highest ranking in the history of the program, won two of three tightly contested doubles matches for the first point of the day, but the Cavaliers won all of the six singles contests for the victory.

In singles, Virginia evened the match as Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) lost, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 3 to 15th-ranked Drew Courtney. The Cavaliers took a 3-1 lead as Patrick Daciek (So., Severna Park, Md.) dropped his No. 4 match, 6-3, 6-2, against No. 19 Jarmere Jenkins and Sebastien Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada) lost, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6 versus No. 55 Lee Singer. Virginia clinched the victory as No. 47 Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) fell, 7-6 (7), 6-3, in the No. 1 contest against fifth-ranked Michael Shabaz.

In other singles results, Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 81, lost, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 2 to sixth-ranked Sanam Singh and Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.) fell, 6-4, 6-7 (8), 1-0 (7) to No. 72 Houston Barrick in the No. 5 contest. A tiebreaker was played in lieu of a third set since the outcome of the team match had been decided.

In doubles action, Tech took the No. 3 match a Somen/Toccis defeated Singe/Singh, 8-4, and the Hokies took the doubles poing at Jacques/Re won a tight, 9-7, contest at No. 2 over Barrick/Jenkins. Virginia captured the No. 1 match as Courtney/Shabaz defeated 53rd-ranked Beck Daciek, 8-7 (5).

The Hokies return to action on March 10 when they travel to Louisville, Ky. to play the No. 10 Cardinals.
