BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team returns to action on Tuesday with a 5 p.m., ACC match against No. 1 Virginia. The contest will be played at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis on the Virginia Tech campus.
Virginia Tech (5-1, 1-0) is ranked No. 19 in the latest ITA national poll which is the highest ranking in the program’s history. Tech is coming off its most impressive win of the season last Friday when the Hokies defeated No. 23 Rice, 7-0. The Hokies have defeated No. 14 Kentucky, No. 21 Boise State and No. 23 Rice with other wins over Brown and Boston College this season.
The Hokies will be led by 47th-ranked Yoann Re, a senior from Verdun, Quebec, Canada, a 2009 All-ACC selection and 2009 NCAA participant. Re has had an outstanding dual match season thus far posting wins over No. 8 Eric Quigley (Kentucky) and No. 16 Bruno Rosa (Rice). The Hokies will also have No. 81 Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), the 2009 ACC Freshman of the Year.
Virginia (10-1, 1-0) won the National Team Indoors title on their home court earlier this month, and nine of the Cavaliers’ ten victories have come against nationally ranked opponents. Last weekend, Virginia recorded, 7-0, shutout wins over LSU and Boston College. The win over the Eagles was the Cavs 49th consecutive (regular and postseason) victory over an ACC opponent.
The Cavalier lineup includes seven ranked players: No. 5 Michael Shabaz, No. 6 Sanam Singh, No. 15 Drew Courtney, No. 19 Jamere Jenkins, No. 55 Lee Singer, No. 72 Houston Barrick and No. 120 Steven Rooda. Barrick/Singh (No. 11) and Courtney/Singer (No. 39) are also ranked in doubles.
Virginia won last year’s meeting in Charlottesville, Va., 6-1, in a match featuring two, three-set contests. Out of 14 sets, seven were decided via a tiebreaker with the Cavaliers winning five. Virginia has won the last six meeting between the two programs after Tech won three in row from 2001-2003.

The match is Faculty/Staff day with all Virginia Tech Faculty and Staff members invited to attend the contest and sign in at the marketing table for a chance to win the “Hokie Track of the Month.” The first 50 fans in attendance will receive a free pair of VT flip flops.
Following Tuesday’s match, Tech will not return to action until March 10, when the Hokies travel to Louisville, Ky., to play the No. 11 Cardinals.
