BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will travel to the Northeast this weekend for two matches. The Hokies open ACC play on Saturday at 10 a.m., in Chestnut Hill, Mass., against Boston College, then travel to Providence, R.I., for a Sunday, 10 a.m., match against Brown.
Virginia Tech (2-1) is ranked No. 20 in this week’s ITA national poll which is the highest ranking in the program’s history. Tech went 2-1 last week to open the dual match schedule, including a 5-2 upset of No. 14 Kentucky. Tech traveled to Urbana, Ill., to participate in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend and dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 15 Illinois before defeating No. 21 Boise State, 54-2.
Tech will be led by Yoann Re, a senior from Verdun, Quebec, Canada, who advanced to the 2009 NCAA Singles Championship tournament and was an All-ACC selection. Re upset eighth-ranked Eric Quigley in the Kentucky match last week. The Hokies will also have Patrick Daciek (So., Severna Park, Md.), ranked No. 75 nationally, playing in the top half of the lineup along with Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), the 2009 ACC Freshman of the Year and Sebastien Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 100 nationally.
Boston College (0-1) lost its season-opener, 5-2, on Jan. 23 at No. 50 Columbia. Tech defeated the Eagles, 7-0, last season in Blacksburg.
Brown (2-2) has defeated Boston Univ. (6-1) and Bryant (7-0), while suffering losses to Buffalo (3-4) and Binghamton (2-5). The Hokies shut out the Bears, 7-0, last year at home.
Following this weekend’s action, Tech will not play again until Feb. 19, in a 5 p.m. home match against No. 32 Rice.
