BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will not have much time to savor its season-opening, 5-2, win over No. 14 Kentucky as the Hokies travel to Urbana, Ill. to participate in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Kick-off Weekend. The Hokies will play No. 14 Illinois at 7 p.m. (ET) Friday at the Atkins Tennis Center.
Virginia Tech (1-0), ranked No. 27 in this week’s ITA national poll, is led by Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) who won the clinching point against the Wildcats at the No. 1 position by defeating eighth-ranked Eric Quigley, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. Luka Somen (So., Karolvac, Croatia) will also be counted on against the Illini after upsetting No. 39 Alexi Musialek, 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, for the final point in Thursday’s match. The Hokies also feature two nationally-ranked players in No. 75 Patricek Daciek (So., Severna Park, Md.) and No. 100 Sebastien Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada).
Illinois (0-1) dropped its season-opener, 6-1, on Jan. 22, against No. 2 Virginia. The Illini are led by No. 43 Dennis Nevolo.
The other first round match will feature No. 22 Boise State (1-0) taking on No. 26 Washington (4-0) at 3 p.m. (ET). The winners will advance to Saturday’s second round match at 7 p.m. (ET) with the loser’s participating in the consolation match at 3 p.m. (ET).
The event features 60 teams playing in 15 regionals across the nation who will battle for the right to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Boars Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. The host team, No. 2 Virginia, awaits the 15 winners, in the finals which will take place Feb. 12-15.
