Hokies upset No. 14 Kentucky, 5-2
Re clinches win

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech opened the 2010 dual match season in style Wednesday afternoon upsetting No. 14 Kentucky, 5-2, at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Tech improves to 1-0 with the victory while the Wildcats suffered their first loss to fall to 2-1.

Virginia Tech, ranked No. 27 in the ITA preseason national poll, lost two of three tight matches to lose the doubles point, but bounced back to win five of the six singles contest.

In singles action, Tech evened the match as Will Beck (Jr., Portomac, Md.), a transfer from Kentucky, picked up the Hokies first point of the day with a, 6-1, 6-3, win at No. 6 over Alex Lambropoulos. However, just moments later Kentucky recaptured the lead as Anthony Rossi won, 6-0, 6-2, over No. 100 Sebastien Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada) in the No. 5 match.

Tech tied up the match at 2-2 when Corrado Degl' Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) won his No. 3 match, 7-5, 6-4, over Brad Cox. The Hokies took their first lead of the afternoon as 75th-ranked Patrick Daciek defeated Alberto Gonzalez, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4. Tech’s clinching point occurred with a huge upset at No. 1 as Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) defeated 8th-ranked Eric Quigley with a come-from-behind, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 win. Not to be outdone, Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Coratia) concluded the contest with a 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, upset of No. 39 Alexi Musialek in the No. 2 match.

In doubles, Kentucky won the the No. 3 match as Musialek/Anthony Rossi defeated Somen/Tocci, 8-4, but the Hokies bouced back as Jacques/Re won the No. 2 contest, 8-4, over Gonzalez/Lambropoulos. The With the doubles point hanging in the balance, the Wildcats ninth-ranked duo of Cox/Quigley pulled out a 9-7 win in the No. 1 match against Tech’s Beck/Daciek.

The Hokies return to action Jan. 29, when they travel to Champaign, Ill. for a match against No. 15 Illinois in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
