BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team opens the dual match season on Wednesday when the Hokies battle No. 14 Kentucky at 2 p.m. The match will be held at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus and admission is free.
Virginia Tech, ranked No. 27 in this week’s ITA national poll, finished the 2008-09 season with a 15-8 record and No. 26 final national ranking, the highest in the history of the program. The Hokies advanced to the NCAA Championship tournament for the third consecutive season last year.
Tech will be led by Yoann Re, a senior from Verdun, Quebec, Canada, who advanced to the 2009 NCAA Singles Championship tournament and was an All-ACC selection. The Hokies will also have Patrick Daciek (So., Severna Park, Md.), ranked No. 75 nationally, playing in the top half of the lineup along with Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), the 2009 ACC Freshman of the Year and Sebastien Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 100 nationally.
Kentucky (2-0), opened its season over the weekend with a 6-1 win over Xavier and a 4-2 victory against Morehead State. The Wildcats are led by Eric Quigley, ranked No. 8 nationally, and Alex Musialek, currently No. 39 in the country. The duo of Brad Cox and Quigley are ranked ninth in the nation in doubles.
Tech defeated Kentucky, 4-0, in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.
Following Wednesday’s contest, the Hokies will travel to Champaign, Ill., on Friday to face No. 15 Illinois in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Kick-Off Weekend. The winner of Virginia Tech/Illinois match will play the No. 21 Boise State/No. 26 Washington winner on Saturday at 6 p.m. for the right to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, Feb. 12-15, at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va., (hosted by the Univ. of Virginia).
