BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will serve as hosts this weekend for the Hokie Challenge. The Hokies will be joined in the event by players from Auburn, College of Charleston, Harvard and Indiana. The tournament will be played indoors at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Admission is free.
The event gets underway Friday, Jan. 22 at 10 a.m., with Saturday matches beginning at 9 a.m. and Sunday start times at 8 a.m. Virginia Tech players are slated to take the court Friday at 4 p.m. The Hokies will also be in action Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at noon. The format will include eight singles flights and four doubles flights with round-robin competition in all flights. There will be no team scoring in the event and winners in each flight will be determined by the following method: 1) won-loss record, 2) head to head, 3) total sets won and 4) total games won.
The Hokie Challenge is the final individual regular season event of the 2009-10 schedule. Tech, ranked No. 27 nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason poll, will return to action Jan. 27, to open the dual match schedule hosting Kentucky at 2 p.m.
