Men's tennis ready for Wilson/ITA Atlantic Regional
Nine Tech players to see action

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech will send nine men’s tennis players across the state to participate in the Wilson/ITA Atlantic Regional tournament. The event, hosted by Old Dominion University, features some of the top players in the nation and will be held at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center. The Atlantic Regional is one of 12 regional events nationally as players battle for a spot at the ITA National Indoor Championships, Nov. 5-8, in New Haven, Conn. The two singles finalists and the winning doubles team will advance to the national tournament.

The Atlantic Regional features 14 nationally ranked players including Virginia Tech’s Yoann Re (No. 35), Patrick Daciek (No. 61) and Luka Somen (No. 125). The tournament includes players from Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, James Madison, Longwood, Liberty, Maryland, Maryland-Baltimore County, Morgan State, Navy, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Radford, St. Joseph’s, Temple, Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth, Virginia Tech and William & Mary.

Four Hokies will see singles action on Thursday with Zach Pine (So., Vienna, Va.) first on the court at 9 a.m. for a match against Anthony Tan (Georgetown). Jon Pine (So., Vienna, Va.) will face Ville Maaranen (James Madison) in a 10 a.m. contest while Corrado Degli Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) battles Greg Vladimirsky (Old Dominion) at 11 a.m. Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.) will be the final Tech player to see singles action on Thursday as he plays Marc Ferrigno (Longwood) at 1 p.m.

Four other Hokies are seeded in the tournament and received first round byes. Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), the third seed, will play his first singles match Friday at 9 a.m. against the winner of Thursday’s C.J. Griffin (Penn State)/Kris Muzalewski (Old Dominion) match. Patrick Daciek (So., Severna Park, Md.), seeded seventh, plays Friday at 8 a.m. against the winner of Guanhau Chen (Penn State)/Charlie Caris match. Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), seeded No. 14, will face the winner of Juan Ortiz (Morgan State)/Marcus Rebersak (Navy) Friday at 10:30 am. Sebastien Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada), seeded No. 15, will play the Eric Ward (Morgan State)/Igor Ogrizek (Radford) winner Friday at 10 a.m.

In doubles, Trpimir Kujundzic (Fr., Zagreb, Coatia)/Jon Pine will play at 3 p.m. against Yakov Diskin/Kris Muzalewski (Old Dominion) with a win advancing the duo to a 5 p.m. contest versus the No. 9 seeded team of Owen Bullard/Eddie Konrad (Navy). Somen/Tocci are the No. 8 seeds and received a first round bye and will play their first match at 5:30 p.m. against the Arsenio Culver/Ben Marks (Norfolk State) vs. Dino Dell’orto/Santiago Villeges (Virginia) match. Beck/Daciek, seeded No. 9, also received a bye and play at 5:45 p.m. versus the winner of Chris Brown/Omar Haluri (Howard) - Logan Bricker/Mwalimu Phiri (UMBC). The fourth doubles team of Jacques/Re, seeded fifth, received a bye and will face Mikey Clarke/Brian Miller (Georgetown), who also received a bye, in a 6 p.m. match.
