TULSA, Okla. -- Two Virginia Tech players failed to hold early leads and dropped their opening matches Monday in the D’Novo All-American Men’s Tennis Championships. Tennis’ top collegiate players are participating in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) first national event of the 2009-10 tennis season which being played at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Patrick Daciek (So., Severna Park, Md.), seeded No. 29 and ranked 81st nationally, dropped his opening round qualifying singles match to 87th-ranked Kiryl Harbatsiuk (Sacramento State), 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, Monday evening. Earlier in the day, Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 125 in the nation, also lost his opening round match, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3, to Fabian Matthews (UC Irvine). Both Hokies will play consolation matches either Tuesday or Wednesday.
Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), ranked 35th nationally, will see his first action in the main draw which will begin on Thursday.
The tournament includes six rounds of pre-qualifying and qualifying tournaments with the pre-qualifying rounds completed over the weekend.
