ATLANTA, Ga. -- Four Virginia Tech players were eliminated Sunday at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational being played at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on the Georgia Tech campus. The four Hokies had each dropped opening round matches early Saturday in singles play.
In Flight A singles, Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.) defeated Austin Roebuck (Georgia Tech), 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-4, in a Saturday Flight A consolation match, before picking up a, 6-1, 6-2, win over Andrei Chvetsov (Furman) Sunday morning. Beck was eliminated in the afternoon by Max Stevens (Tennessee), 6-4, 6-2. Zach Pine (So., Vienna, Va.) won his Saturday consolation match, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, over Will Reynolds (Georgia), but was eliminated Sunday morning, 7-6 (4), 6-0, by Edward Jones (Tennessee).
Trpimir Kujundzic (Fr., Zagreb, Crotia) won, 6-2, 6-2, Saturday in the Flight B consolation bracket over Robert Bruner (Furman), before winning two matches on Sunday. Kujundzic came from behind to defeat Kosta Blank (UNC Wilmington), 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4, and won another three-set match, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4, over Aaron Nikalov (UNC Wilmington) before withdrawing from the competition. Jon Pine (So., Vienna, Va.) dropped his Flight B consolation match, 7-5, 6-2, to Paul Fitzgerald (Armstrong Atlantic State).
In Flight B doubles, Kujundzic/Jon Pine lost their quarterfinal match, 8-5, to the third-seeded team of Max Ando Hirsch/Michael Pereira (UNC Wilmington).
Three other members of the Tech men’s team are in Tulsa, Okla. where they will participate in the ITA All-American tournament this week. Patrick Daciek and Luka Somen will see action in the qualifying singles bracket on Monday, while Yoann Re, ranked No. 35 nationally, has already qualified for the main draw which begins on Thursday, Oct. 8. Re and Daciek will also team up to participate in the qualifying doubles competition at a time to be announced.
