ATLANTA, Ga. -- Virginia Tech struggled on the first day of the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational being played at the Bill Moore Tennis Center of the Georgia Tech campus. The four Hokies participating in the event dropped all four of their opening round single matches and split two doubles contests on the first day of the event.
In Flight A singles, Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.) dropped his opening round match, 6-3, 6-3, against sixth-seeded Christian Vitulli (Georgia) while Zach Pine (So., Vienna, Va.) fell, 6-3, 6-3, to Kinshuk Sharma (UNC Wilmington).
Jon Pine (So., Vienna, Va.) dropped his opening round Flight B contest, 6-3, 6-3, versus Jose Carlos Tolentino (Armstrong Atlantic State) and Trpimir Kujundzic (Fr., Zagreb, Crotia) dropped a tight, 7-6, 7-6, contest against Alex Wetherall (UNC Wilmington). All four Tech players were scheduled to see action in the consolation round later in the day but results were not available.
The Hokies picked up their lone victory of the day in Flight B doubles where Kujundzic/Jon Pine defeated Mario Hernandez/Chad Pierron (Lipscomb), 8-5, and were scheduled to face the third-seeded team of Max Ando Hirsch/Michael Pereira (UNC Wilmington). Beck/Zach Pine dropped their Flight A opening match, 8-4, to Carlos Alvarez/Gera Borychinskiy (Clemson). The Tech pair also were slated to see consolation action later in the day.
The event continues through Monday. Several other members of the Tech men’s team are in Tulsa, Okla. where they will participate in the ITA All-American tournament next week
