CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Sebastian Jacques saw his season-opening run come to an end Sunday morning in the semifinals of the UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational. Five other Hokies also concluded play on Sunday in the event which was played indoors the first two days due to inclement weather at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at Boar’s Head Sports Club. A portion of Sunday’s action was also held indoors while other matches were held outdoors at the Snyder Tennis Center on the University of Virginia campus.
Jacques, who had upset two nationally ranked players in the first two days of the tournament, dropped the A-3 semifinal, 6-1, 6-4, to 84th-ranked Drew Courtney (Virginia). Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 35, won the fifth place A-3 bracket defeating Iaion Atkinson (Wake Forest), 6-2, 6-2, and 61st-ranked Keziel Juneau (William & Mary), 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (7).
Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.) dropped two matches in the A-1 consolation falling, 7-5, 6-1, versus Eric Quigley (Kentucky) and, 6-3, 7-5, against Lachlan Ferguson (Indiana). Patrick Daciek (So., Severna Park, Md.) dropped his A-2 consolation semi, 6-1, 6-1, to Luke Marchese (Duke).
Elsewhere, Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia) won his A-4 fifth place semi, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8), over Santiago Villegas (Virginia), before dropping a, 6-3, 6-4, decision to Sebastian Vidal (William & Mary). In A-4 singles consolation action, Corrado Degli Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) lost his semifinal, 6-0, 6-0, to Ferguson (Indiana).
Daciek and Somen will see action at the ITA All-American Qualifying, Oct. 2-4, in Tulsa, Okla., while Re has already secured a spot in the ITA All-American main draw. Beck along with Trpimir Kujundzic, Jonathan Pine and Zach Pine are scheduled to travel to Norfolk, Va., Oct. 2-4, to participate in the ODU Collegiate Invitational
