Jacques rolls on at UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational
Tech player defeats another ranked player en route to semifinal

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Sebastian Jacques continued his strong play in his first tournament of the fall season with another victory over a nationally ranked opponent. The Tech junior, fresh off a win over 12th-ranked and top seed Austen Childs (Louisville) on Friday, defeated No. 67 Patrice Alvarado (Southern Miss), 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to Sunday’s Flight A-3 semifinal.

The event, featuring 31 nationally-ranked players, was scheduled to be played at the Snyder Tennis Center on the University of Virginia campus, however inclement weather forced both Friday’s and Saturday’s play indoors at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at Boar’s Head Sports Club.

In other singles results, Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 35 and seeded second in Flight A-3, was upset, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals by Henrique Cunha (Duke). Re will play Sunday in the fifth place bracket. Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.) defeated Julien Rousel (Southern Miss), 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the A-l consolation semifinals. Patrick Daciek (So., Severna Park, Md.) advanced to the A-2 singles consolation semis with a, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (7), win over Ivan Salec (Radford).

Elsewhere, Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia) dropped his A-4 quarterfinal, 7-5, 6-3, against 14th-ranked and top seed Michael Shabaz (Virginia). Somen will play in the fifth place bracket on Sunday. In A-4 singles consolation action, Corrado Degli Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) picked up a, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (8), win over Tarsten Wietaska (Duke) and will play in the semifinal Sunday.

Doubles action concluded on Saturday and in the A-2 Flight Beck/Jacques lost, 8-6, to Rooda/Singh (Virginia) and dropped their second consolation match, 8-4, to Arnould/Holland (Duke). The Hokies had more success in A-Doubles consolation as Somen/Tocci defeated Alvarado/Rousel (Southern Miss), 8-5, then won the bracket, 8-6, versus Hernandez/Hunter (UNC).

The duo of Daciek/Re dropped two matches in the A-4 Flight consolation losing, 8-2, against Marchese/Wietoska (Duke) then lost, 8-6, to Calligari/Hall (Louisville).

Play in the event concludes on Saturday with finals in all flights.
