CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginia Tech’s Sebastien Jacques recorded the upset of the day Friday afternoon at the UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational. Yoann Re and Luka Somen also advanced in their brackets in the three-day event which was forced indoors at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The 72-player field consists of 31 ranked singles players from 17 schools.
Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada) opened his fall schedule with a come-from-behind, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, upset of the A-3 Singles Flight top seed, 12th-ranked Austen Childs (Louisville). In the same flight, Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), seeded second and ranked No. 35 nationally, overcame a sluggish second set to pull out a, 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-1, victory over Krisztian Krocsko (Virginia Commonwealth). The Tech pair advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 125 nationally, defeated Brad Cox (Kentucky), 6-2, 7-6 (5), to advance to the A-4 Singles Flight quarterfinals. Also in Flight A-4, Corrado Degli Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) dropped his first match of the fall season, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, to Mila Johnson (Virginia). Tocci won his flight two weeks ago at the Landfall Invitational in Wilmington, N.C. He will play in the consolation round on Saturday.
Elsewhere, Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.), a transfer from Kentucky, had an unsuccessful Tech debut in the A-1 singles flight dropping a, 6-3, 6-1, decision against the No. 3 seed and 50th-ranked Houston Barrick (Virginia). Both Beck and Daciek will see action in Saturday’s consolation round.
The Hokies struggled in the morning doubles competition as Beck/Jacques lost, 8-3, to the second-seeded team of Conkic/Williams (Tennessee) in the A-2 doubles flight, while Somen/Tocci dropped a tight, 8-6, match to the top-seeds and 17th-ranked duo of Jenkins/Shabaz (Virginia) in the A-3 doubles. Daciek/Re fell, 8-6, to Calligari/Hall (Louisville) in their first A-4 doubles contest. All three teams will play in the consolation rounds of their respective flights on Saturday.
