BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Six members of the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will travel to Charlottesville, Va., this weekend to participate in the UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational. The 72-player field consists of 31 ranked singles players from 17 schools in the event, which is being held at the Snyder Tennis Center on the University of Virginia campus. If necessary due to inclement weather, matches will be moved indoors to the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

The singles field is highlighted by eight players that competed in last year’s NCAA Singles Championship, including Virginia Tech’s Yoann Re. That group consists of 2009 NCAA semifinalist Sanam Singh of Virginia, along with 2008 national runner-up John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee. The tournament will include four, 16-player and one, eight-man singles flights with four, eight-team doubles flights.

Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.), a transfer from Kentucky, will make his Tech debut in the A-1 singles flight against the No. 3 seed and 50th-ranked Houston Barrick. Patrick Daciek (So., Severna Park, Md.), ranked No. 81 in the fall preseason singles poll, plays second-seed and 16th-ranked Clay Donoto (North Carolina) in A-2 singles.

Two Hokies will see action in the A-3 singles bracket with Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), seeded second and ranked No. 35 nationally, taking on Krisztian Krosko (Virginia Commonwealth) in his first match. In the same draw, Sebastien Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada) will play top seed and 12th-ranked Austen Childs (Louisville).

The other two Tech players participating in the event will be Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 125 nationally, who will battle Brad Cox (Kentucky) and Corrado Degli Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) who faces Milo Johnson (Virginia) in the first round. Tocci won his flight two weeks ago at the Landfall Invitational in Wilmington, N.C.

Beck/Jacques will face the second-seeded team of Conkic/Williams (Tennessee) in their first A-2 doubles match, while Somen/Tocci face the top-seeded and 17th-ranked duo of Jenkins/Shabaz (Virginia) in the A-3 doubles. Daciek/Re will play Calligari/Hall (Louisville) in their first A-4 doubles contest.

Play begins on Friday at 10 a.m., with the schedule including one round of doubles and two rounds of singles.
