Tocci moves into UNCW Invitational final
Pine brothers make Flight B doubles final

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Virginia Tech’s Corrado Degli Incerti Tocci continued his domination on Saturday at UNCW RBC Wealth Management Invitational while a Tech doubles team advanced to Flight B final. The flighted event includes players from Campbell, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Georgia State, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and UNC Wilmington. The tournament is being held at the Country Club of Landfall’s Drysdale Tennis Center.

Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy), seeded third, cruised through two matches Saturday to advance to the Sunday’s final. Tocci defeated Dmirty Vlaskin (Coastal Carolina), 7-6, 6-3, in the quarters before blasting Carlos Salmon (Wake Forest), 6-1, 6-0, in the semis. He will face Davy Sum (Campbell) in the 11:15 a.m., final.

Tech’s Trpimir Kujundzic (Fr., Zagreb, Croatia) dropped his Flight A consolation semifinal, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (5), to Jackson Moore (Georgia State) and was eliminated from further competition.

In Flight B consolation singles, Jonathan Pine (So., Vienna, Va.) defeated John Schmitt (East Carolina), 6-4, 6-3, then defeated Pablo Nunez Palmieri (East Carolina), 6-3, 6-4, in the final. Palmieri earlier in the day defeated Tech’s Zachary Pine (So., Vienna, Va.), 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the title match. Zachary Pine bounced back to defeat Schmitt, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (5) in another consolation match.

The Pines defeated Anton Nikolov/Illia Ziamtsov (UNC Wilmington), 8-6, in the Flight B semifinals and will play top seeds Funkhouser/Sovic (Coastal Carolina) in the 10 a.m., final. Kujundzic/Tocci lost their Flight A consolation semifinal, 9-8, against Bryan Oakley/Henrik Skalmerud (East Carolina).
