Tocci cruises at UNCW Invitational
Pine brothers win in doubles

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team saw mixed results on the first day of UNCW RBC Wealth Management Invitational. Tech won one of four singles matches and split two doubles contests on the day. The flighted event includes players from Campbell, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Georgia State, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and UNC Wilmington. The tournament is being held at the Country Club of Landfall’s Drysdale Tennis Center.

Corrado Degli Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy), seeded third, was dominant in his first match of the fall season with a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Alex Wetherell (UNC Wilmington) in the Flight A singles. Tocci will face Dmirty Vlaskin (Coastal Carolina) Saturday at 11 a.m., in the quarterfinals. A victory would send him into the 5 p.m. semifinal.

Tech’s other singles results were not as positive as Trpimir Kujundzic (Fr., Zagreb, Croatia) dropped his collegiate debut in a tough, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, loss to Conner Sherwood (Wake Forest). Kujundzic received a bye in the first round of Saturday’s consolation and will not take court until 5 p.m. against an undetermined opponent. In Flight B singles, Jonathan Pine (So., Vienna, Va.) lost, 7-5, 6-2 to Alex Funkhouser (Campbell) and plays John Schmitt (East Carolina) in a 12;30 p.m., consolation match while Zachary Pine (So., Vienna, Va.) fell, 6-2, 6-2, versus Chris Cooprider (UNC Wilmington) and also plays in the consolation at 12:30 p.m. against Pablo Nunez Palmieri (East Carolina).

The Hokies split their two doubles contests Friday morning. Kujundzic/Tocci lost, 8-5, against Matt Gordon/Dmirty Vlaskin (Coastal Carolina) in A doubles and will play Bryan Oakley/Henrik Skalmerud (East Carolina) in the consolation Saturday at 8:30 a.m. The Pines opened Flight B action with an 8-2 win over Chad Brady/Amogh Prabhakar (Wake Forest) and will face Anton Nikolov/Illia Ziamtsov (UNC Wilmington) Saturday at 8:30 a.m. in the semifinals.

Play in the event continues on Saturday with one round of doubles at 8:30 a.m. followed by two rounds of singles action. Finals are scheduled for Sunday in all events.
