BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech has announced the addition of Christophe Bonadona as the men’s tennis assistant coach. Bonadona replaces Jimmy Borendame who recently accepted a position as head coach at Drake University.
Bonadona comes to Virginia Tech from Van Der Meer Tennis Academy in Hilton Head, S.C., where he served for two years as a teaching professional. While at Van Der Meer, he instructed and coached elite players during their daily practices and handle travel arrangements to various tournaments. Bonadona was responsible for the design of the strength and conditioning programs at the academy.
Prior to the Van Der Meer Academy, Bonadona completed a 2006 tournament management internship at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, R.I. His internship responsibilities included management of player relations, accommodations, hospitality and transportation. Additionally the internship included serving as a liaison with sponsor representatives as well as the management of volunteers, junior clinics and product acquisition.
The 24-year old Bonadona served as a sports marketing intern in 2005 for Nike Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico where he assisted with the planning and development of Run Americas, a running initiative with the objective of attracting 20,000 runners to the program.
Bonadona is a 2007 graduate of Webber International University in Babson, Fla. with a Bachelor of Science degree in sport management and a marketing minor.
“I am thrilled to have someone like Christophe joining our coaching staff and he will contribute a great deal right away both on and off the courts,” said Virginia Tech men’s tennis coach Jim Thompson. “Christophe has had the opportunity to work beside two of the best in the tennis business in Pat and Dennis Van Der Meer, and I am certain that with his vast experiences he will be a great coach here at Virginia Tech. He has shown great discipline and leadership skills and it is great to have him as a part of our program.”
The Hokies open the 2009 fall season on Sept. 11-13 with some players participating in the Landfall Invitational in Wilmington, N.C., while others will travel to Charlottesville, Va., for the UVa Invitational.
