CARY, N.C. – Virginia Tech had no trouble in the opening round of the ACC Championships with a dominating 4-0 over Maryland Thursday afternoon at CaryTennisPark. The Hokies improved to 14-6 on the year and advance to the quarterfinals on Friday against third-seed Wake Forest at 3 p.m. The Demon Deacons, ranked No. 20 nationally, defeated Tech, 6-1, last Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C.Maryland, the 11th seed in the tournament, concludes the year with a 7-14 record.
The Hokies, ranked No. 27 nationally and seeded sixth in the event, took two of the three doubles matches for the first point and all three of the completed singles contests for the victory.
In singles, Pedro Graber (Jr., Santiago, Chile) cruised past David Kwon, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 2 contest while Sebastien Jacques (So., Magog, Quebec, Canada) defeated Mathias Sarrazin, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4. The Hokies collected the final point as Brandon Corace (Sr., Naples, Fla.) won 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 over Boris Fetbroyt. Nicolas Delgado de Robles (Sr., Madrid, Spain), ranked No. 92 nationally, along with Luka Somen (Fr., Karlovac, Croatia) and Patrick Daciek (Fr., Severna Park, Md.) all had their matches halted once Tech had clinched the win.
Tech took an early lead in the doubles competition as Daciek/Delgado de Robles won, 8-5, at No. 1 versus Fetbroyt/Orban and Corace/Graber defeated Aksanov/Kwon, 8-5, in the No. 2 match. Maryland recorded its only win of the day at No. 3 as Nelson/Sarrazin defeated Tech’s Jacques/Somen, 8-6. #27 Virginia Tech 4, Maryland 0
