Atlantic Coast Conference Announces 2009 Men's Tennis Awards
Luka Somen named Freshman of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Top-ranked Virginia, which just completed a third straight unbeaten regular season against Atlantic Coast Conference opposition, placed four student-athletes on the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Team announced today by the league office.

Florida State’s Jean-Yves Aubone was named Player of the Year in balloting by the league’s 12 head coaches. Virginia Tech’s Luka Somen received the nod as Freshman of the Year, while Virginia’s Brian Boland was named Coach of the Year for the second straight year and the third time overall.

The Cavaliers, who seek their third straight title as the 2009 ACC Championships get under way today in Cary, N.C., led all schools with their four selections to the 18-member squad. Florida State placed three members on team, while two each were selected from Miami, North Carolina and Wake Forest. Five schools – Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, NC State and Virginia Tech – each had one student-athlete selected.

Aubone, the Seminoles’ No. 1 singles player and a junior from Miami, Fla., posted a 16-7 record this spring, including a 9-1 record against ACC opposition. He has been ranked among the nation’s top players throughout the year and carries a No. 16 ITA national ranking into this week’s ACC Championships.

Somen, a native of Karlovac, Croatia, completed his first season of collegiate competition with a 24-12 overall record while playing at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 flight positions. He posted a 5-4 record in ACC play.

Boland’s Cavaliers have led the national rankings most of regular season. In addition to a 26-0 overall record to date and 11-0 mark in ACC competition, highlights have included the National Indoors Championship in Chicago in mid-February.

The ACC Championships begin with first round matches today and will run through Sunday’s 11 a.m. men’s and women’s title matches. Follow the action at:
