GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference has announced the brackets for the 2009 ACC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships held at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C., on April 16-19. Virginia Tech will be competing in its fifth ACC Tournament.

Tech’s men’s team, ranked No. 22 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) is the sixth seed in the 12-team bracket. The Hokies are paired up to play Maryland, the 11th seed in the bracket, on Thursday, April, 16 at 3 p.m.

The Hokies completed the regular season with a 13-6 overall and 6-4 ACC record. The Terps have a 7-13 dual record and are 1-10 in conference matches.

Tech, then ranked No. 73, took a 5-2 decision in College Park, Md., over the Terrapins on March 1. In that contest, the Hokies lost the doubles point, then took five of the six singles contests.

The winner of Thursday's match moves on to face the No. 3 seed in the championships, 25th-ranked Wake Forest on Friday, April 17 at 3 p.m. The Demon Deacons defeated Tech, 6-1, in Winston-Salem, N.C., last Saturday.

On Saturday, April 18, there will be two semi-final matches. The first semi-final match is slated for 10 a.m., while the second semi-final match will be played at 1 p.m. The 11 a.m. title match will conclude the conference championship on Sunday, April 19.

The Hokies, ranked No. 62, are the eighth seed in the women’s bracket and are set to open the conference championship on Thursday, April 16 at 9 a.m., against No. 9 seed Wake Forest, ranked No. 37 by the ITA.

Tech is 13-10 overall and 3-8 in the ACC, while Wake Forest is 12-11 overall and 3-8 in conference action.

The eighth seed, earned by virtue of the Hokies 5-2 win Sunday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va., is the highest seed since the program first played in the event in 2005. Tech won two of the three doubles matches against Wake to capture the doubles point and then won four of the six singles contests for the victory.

Next up for the winner of Thursday's match is a 9 a.m. contest versus the No. 1 seed, sixth-ranked Miami, on Friday, April 18.

The two semi-final matches will be played on Saturday, April 18 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The championships conclude with the 11 a.m. title match on Sunday, April 19.
