Delgado de Robles victory propels Tech to 4-3 win
The Madrid, Spain native upset the 36th-ranked player in the country

RALEIGH, N.C. – The #22 Virginia Tech men’s tennis squad received a strong performance from Nicolas Delgado de Robles at the No. 1 singles match to carry the squad to a 4-3 victory over #51 NC State. Tech moves to 13-5, 6-3 in ACC play, while the Wolfpack falls to 9-13, 3-7 in ACC competition.

Tech won three singles matches on the day, after capturing the all-important doubles point to hold off the Wolfpack, 4-3.

After dropping its first match in singles play, as Sebastien Jacques (So., Magog, Quebec, Canada) fell to Jaime Pulgar of NC State in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, at No.4 singles, Delgado de Robles (Sr., Madrid, Spain) responded with a upset victory in the No. 1 singles match over 36th-ranked Jay Weinacker of the Wolfpack. Delgado de Robles took the first set 6-4, but dropped the next frame in a tiebreak, 7-5. Delgado de Robles made sure the match would not slip away though, with a dominating 6-1 victory in the third set to wrap up the contest.

At the No. 5 singles match, Brandon Corace (Sr., Naples, Fla.) beat the Wolfpack’s Julian Sullivan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, and Patrick Daciek (Fr., Severna Park, Md.) took care of David Shermak of NC State, 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles bout to wrap up the match for Tech.

The Hokies dropped the next two bouts, as Pedro Graber (Jr., Santiago, Chile) fell to No. 118 Christian Welte of NC State, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, at the No. 2 singles match and Luka Somen (Fr., Karlovac, Croatia)) lost a heartbreaker to Derek Stephens, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in the No. 3 singles match.

The Hokies started the day out strongly in the doubles competition. Daciek/Delgado de Robles captured the No. 1 doubles match over Welte/Sullivan of NC State 8-3. Graber/Corace fell at the No. 2 doubles match to Weinacker/Pulgar of NC State 8-4, as the Wolfpack evened up the doubles competition, but Jacques/Somen buried the Wolfpack’s No. 3 doubles unit of Jendruch/Lowe 8-4, to seize the doubles point for Tech.

Tech closes out the ACC regular season tomorrow against #25 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. at 3 p.m. Results will be available on hokiesports.com following the match.
