BLACKSBURG, Va. --- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will host two key matches in the next three days at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Tech will host No. 62 Georgia Tech Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. and Clemson Sunday at noon. The Hokies achieved the program’s highest national ranking this week at No. 21 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll and are 5-0 at home this season.
Tech (9-3, 2-1) is led by Yoann Re (Jr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) who is 11-1 in dual matches and 3-0 in the ACC. Re has defeated three nationally ranked opponents this season including two in the top ten. Also providing depth to the lineup are freshmen Luka Somen (Karlovac, Croatia) and Patrick Daciek (Severna Park, Md.) who are a combined 15-6 in dual matches along with sophomore Sebastien Jacques (Magog, Quebec, Canada) who is 7-2 this spring.
Georgia Tech (6-6, 1-2) defeated Tennessee Tech, 5-2, on Tuesday in its last match. The Yellow Jackets will be led by Guillermo Gomez who is ranked No. 12 in the nation. The Hokies won at Georgia Tech, 6-1, last season.
Clemson (8-7, 1-2) will play at No. 1 Virginia Friday before heading to Blacksburg for Sunday’s encounter. The Tigers defeated Stetson, 6-1, on March 14 in their last action. Clemson upset the Hokies, 4-3, last year at home but the Hokies avenged the loss with a 4-3 win in the opening round of the ACC Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
The first 100 fans in attendance on Friday will receive a free drink with a VT Koozie and a bag of popcorn. The match is also a Greek Challenge where the sorority or fraternity with the largest percentage of members present will receive a $100 gift certificate to the business of their choice.
The first 100 fans at Sunday’s contest will receive a free VT car flag. Live scoring of both matches will be available at http://www.hokiesports.com/mtennis/live.
