BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men's tennis recorded its' most impressive victory thus far of the season with a convincing 5-2 win over No. 16 Louisville Friday evening at the Burleson-Burrows Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. The Hokies improved to 8-2 on the year while the Cardinals fell to11-3 with the loss.
Tech, ranked No. 32 in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. won the doubles point then took four of the six singles contests in the win.
In singles, Tech built a commanding 3-0 lead as Nicolas Delgado de Robles (Sr., Madrid, Spain) dominated 74th-ranked Viktor Maksimcuk, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2 and Luka Somen (Fr., Karlovac, Croatia) had no trouble at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Simon Childs. The Hokies clinched when Yoann Re (Jr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 59 nationally and the reining ACC Player of the Week, defeated No. 40 Austen Childs, 7-6 (8), 6-1, in the No. 1 contest.
Tech also picked up a point at No. 4 as Sebastien Jacques (So., Magog, Quebec, Canada) won 7-5, 6-4, versus Alejandro Calligari. Louisville recorded its' two points with wins as No. 5 and No. 6 as Robert Hall edged Brandon Corace (Sr., Naples, Fla.), 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (11) and Andrew Carter picked up a come-from-behind, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, win over Patrick Daciek (Fr., Severna Park, Md.)
The match opened with Tech taking the doubles point as Re/Jacques won, 8-2, over Calligari/Robert Rotanu at No. 2 and then clinched the point as Corace/Pedro Graber (Jr., Santiago, Chile) defeated Hall/Maksimcuk, 8-5 in the No. 3 match. Louisville's 15th-ranked team of Childs/Childs edged No. 67 Delgado de Robles/Somen, 8-7, in the final match.
Tech returns to hardcourt on Fri., March 13, at No. 43 TCU.
