Cavaliers defeat Hokies
Tech will travel to take on Maryland on Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team dropped their first ACC contest of the season against in-state rival Virginia in a match at the Boyd Tinsley Courts in Charlottesville, Va. The No. 1 ranked Cavaliers defeated the Hokies, 6-1. Tech is now 6-2 in regular season play and 1-1 in conference matches, while Virginia moves to 15-0 overall and 3-0 in the ACC.

Virginia Tech, ranked No. 31 in this week’s ITA national poll, lost all three doubles matches and dropped five of six in singles contests this evening.

In match No.3 of singles competition, Virginia’s Michael Shabaz, No. 12 ranked, beat Pedro Graber (Jr. Santiago, Chile) of Virginia Tech, 6-0, 2-1, after he retired the match to his opposition. Tech garnered its first point of the contest after No. 86 ranked Yoann Re (Jr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) upset no. 6 ranked Dominic Inglot of Virginia, 7-5, 6-1. The Cavaliers came back to win the fourth match, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) after No. 81 Houston Barrick dropped Tech freshman Luke Somen (Karlovac, Croatia).

Virginia claimed the victory at the conclusion of the fifth contest. Cavalier Steven Eelkman Roda dropped Hokie sophomore Sebastian Jacques (Magog, Quebec, Canada), 7-6 (10-8), 7-5. The Cavaliers won the final two contests to garner five singles points. In the second match Virginia’s Sanam Singh, ranked No. 17, beat Hokie senior Nicolas Delgado de Robles (Madrid, Spain), ranked No. 92, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-4) 10-6. Cavaliers Drew Courtney closed out the evenings festivities with a 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3) win, beating Tech senior Brandon Corace (Naples, Fla.).

In first match of doubles action, the Virginia team of Singh and Barrick, ranked No. 2 nationally, defeated Somen and Delgado de Robles, ranked No. 44 nationally, 8-2., while in the third match the Cavaliers secured the doubles point when Courtney and Singer beat the Tech team of Corace and Graber, 8-4. Virginia handed Tech its third straight defeat in doubles play in match number two. The No. 10 ranked doubles team of Inglot and Shabaz took down the Hokie duo of Jacques and Re, 9-8 and 7-5.

The Hokies will be back in action this weekend. Tech will travel to Maryland on Sunday to take on the No. 73 Terrapins. The start time is slated for noon.
