BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will host a home-opening doubleheader Friday against College of Charleston and St. Bonaventure. The Hokies will play the Cougars at 3 p.m. followed by the match against the Bonnies at 7 p.m. Both contests will be played at the Burrow-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus and admission is free. The contests will also be available on the internet via ACC Select.
Virginia Tech (2-1), ranked No. 32 in this week’s ITA national poll, took a tough 4-2 decision last week at No. 44 Penn State. The Hokies dropped the doubles point before rallying to win four of the five completed singles matches.
College of Charleston (1-2) dropped its’ last match, 4-3, to Winthrop. The Cougars lost their season-opener, 1-6, at William & Mary before defeating Presbyterian, 7-0. College of Charleston is coached by former Virginia Tech player Jay Bruner who during his career was the recipient of the team’s 1998 Most Improved Player Award, the 2000 Oliver Mayo Award and the 2001 Bernstine Award.
St. Bonaventure (1-2) opened the year by blanking St. Francis, 7-0, but has dropped the last two matches at No. 44 Penn State, 7-0, and at Cleveland State, 6-1.
Last year in Blacksburg, Tech defeated St. Bonaventure, 7-0, in the Larsen Bowker Shootout and did not play College of Charleston.
Following Friday’s contests, the Hokies will open ACC play on Fri., Feb. 20, hosting Boston College at 4 p.m.
