Tocci makes finals at Crimson Tide Invitational
Re/Tocci upset top seeds

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.. -- Virginia Tech freshman Corrado Degli Incerti Tocci had a very successful second day at the Crimson Tide Fall Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Tocci advanced to a singles final and a doubles semifinal on Sunday at the three-day event.

The tournament includes 116 players from 18 schools and is hosted by the University of Alabama. Matches are being played at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium, the Alabama Recreation Courts and the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility.

Tocci (Fr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) advanced to Sunday’s final in the Steadman Shealy division with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-0, victory over Phil Janz (Troy) and a 6-2, 6-3 win against Houssam Yassine (Alabama). He will face Victor Vaz (Jacksonville) in the 11:30 a.m. (eastern) final.

Elsewhere, Preston Lemon (Sr., Roanoke, Va.) defeated Matthew Harris (UT Martin), 6-2, 7-5, in the Bart Starr bracket, but was eliminated with a 6-0, 6-2, semifinal loss versus Oliver Reynolds (Samford). Jonathan Pine (Fr., Vienna, Va.) edged Jan Bumeister (Southern Miss), 7-5, 7-5, before dropping a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, contest in the Gene Stallings division to James Moye (Vanderbilt). Patrick Daciek (Fr., Severna Park, Md.) fell ill and lost in the Joe Namath consolation draw, 6-1, ret. against Oscar Muchuan (Southern Miss).

Two Hokies were eliminated by nationally-ranked opponents in the Bear Bryant bracket as Pedro Graber (Jr., Santiago, Chile) fell, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, to 50th-ranked Lucas Jovitz (South Florida) and Yoann Re (Jr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) dropped a tough, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (5), contest to No. 57 Matthieu Thibaudeau (Alabama). Zachary Pine (Fr., Vienna, Va.) dropped his match in the Ken Stabler division, 6-1, 6-4, to Ricky Daverspike (Alabama), but bounced back to defeat Chase Price (Chattanooga), 6-0, 6-1, in the consolation draw.

In Red Doubles, Re/Tocci upset the top-seeded team of Nick Cromydas/Vijay Paul (Vanderbilt), 8-3, and will play Thomas Estrada/Lucas Jovitz (South Florida) in the semifinals. Daciek/Graber, the No. 6 seeds, were eliminated, 8-6, by the second-seeded team of Ricky Daverspike/Matthieu Thibaudeau (Alabama). Zachary Pine/Lemon defeated Phil Junz/Maxima Zamora (Troy), 8-4, in consolation doubles action.

The event will conclude Sunday in all divisions.
