CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The top two seeds proved to be too tough to beat Sunday afternoon as Pedro Graber and Yoann Re were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Wilson/ITA Mideast Region Championships. The third Hokie to see action, Nicolas Delgado de Robles, lost in the morning Round of 16. The tournament was being played at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the University of North Carolina campus and at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center at Duke University.
The day opened on a promising note as Re (Jr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) won his Round of 16 match, 3-6, 7-6 (6), ret. (inj.) over Nicolas Vinel (Virginia Commonwealth). Graber (Jr., Santiago, Chile) also opened successfully with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, upset over No. 17 seed Bo Ladyman (Furman). Delgado de Robles (Sr., Madrid, Spain) faced Houston Barrick (Virginia) in the Round of 16 with both players tied for No. 75 nationally. Barrick eliminated Delgado de Robles in a tight 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, contest.
The Hokies bowed out of the tournament in the semifinals as Re dropped a 6-4, 6-1, decision to top-seed and 18th-ranked Dom Inglot (Virginia) while Graber fell by the same score to second-seed and 24th-ranked Cory Parr (Wake Forest).
Tech will conclude the fall portion of the schedule on Oct. 24-26 at the Crimson Tide Fall Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
