CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Three Virginia Tech players advanced Saturday to the Round of 16 at the Wilson/ITA Mideast Region Championships. The tournament is being played at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the University of North Carolina campus and at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center at Duke University.

In Round of 64 matches, Patrick Daciek (Fr., Severna Park, Md) upset seventh-seeded and 68th-ranked Jay Weinacker (NCSU), 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, and teammate Pedro Graber (Jr., Santiago, Chile) shocked the No. 13 seed and 88th-ranked Gera Boyradchainsky (Clemson), 6-7, 6-2, 6-1. Elsewhere, Yoann Re (Jr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) defeated Oscar Podlewski (Elon), 6-4, 6-1, and Sebastien Jacques (So., Magog, Quebec, Canada) cruised by Davy Sum (Campbell), 7-6 (7), 6-1. Nicolas Delgado de Robles (Sr., Madrid, Spain), seeded eighth and ranked No. 75, had no trouble with Daniel Knause (Furman), 6-3, 6-4. Luka Somen (Fr., Karlovac, Croatia) put a scare in the tournament’s second seed and 24th-ranked Cory Parr (Wake Forest) before falling 4-6, 6-0. 6-0.

The most interesting matchup in the Round of 16 was the all-Hokie match between Daciek and Re. After Daciek took the first set, 6-4, Re rallied to win the final two sets, 6-2, 6-1. Elsewhere, Delgado de Robles defeated Mike Smith (James Madison), 6-3, 6-3, and Graber eliminated Lee Singer (Virginia), 6-4, 6-4. Jacques was forced to retire with an injury against No. 16 seed Damon Gooch (Elon) trailing 6-0, inj.

Sunday’s schedule has Re taking on Nicolas Vinel (VCU), Delgado de Robles facing ninth-seed and 75th-ranked Houston Barrick (Virginia) and Graber battling Bo Ladyman (North Carolina).

In doubles, the last Tech team remaining was eliminated as Delgado/Somen lost their Round of 16 match, 8-6, against fifth-seeded Sebastien Vidal/Richard Wardell (William & Mary).

The event features almost 200 of the best players in the region competing to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships next month in Charlottesville, Va. The two singles finalists and the doubles champion from the regional will automatically qualify for the national championship.
