CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Virginia Tech will have six singles players and one doubles team still alive when play begins Saturday morning in the main draw of the Wilson/ITA Mideast Region Championships. Patrick Daciek, Pedro Graber and Luka Somen each won matches Friday and will join Nicolas Delgado de Robles, Yoann Re, and Sebastien Jacques, who received byes Friday into the Round of 64. The Tech duo of Delgado/Somen also advanced with a pair of doubles victories.
Daciek (Fr., Severna Park, Md.) defeated Luke Mojica (UNC), 6-3, 6-4, to advance while Somen (Fr., Karlovac, Croatia) beat David Kwon (Maryland), 6-0, 3-6, 6-2. In other singles results, Graber (Jr., Santiago, Chile) took care of Brennan Boyajian (UNC), 6-1, 6-2, however, Brandon Corace (Sr., Naples, Fla.) was eliminated with a tough, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, loss versus Andy Juc (Furman), Three other Hokies, (8) Delgado de Robles (Sr., Madrid, Spain), ranked No. 75 nationally, (17) Re (Jr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) and (24) Jacques (So., Magog, Quebec, Canada) were seeded and received first round byes.
In doubles, Delgado/Somen advanced with a couple of victories defeating Plamen Tzvetker/Dmitry Vlaskin (Coastal Carolina), 8-2, and then upset the ninth-seeded team of Jason Morgenstern/Jon Wolf (Wake Forest), 8-4. Daciek/Graber picked up a 8-4 win over Sammi Belakolf/Mike Sommer (Richmond), before losing 8-4 versus Jamie Pulgar/Derek Stephens. Elsewhere, Jacques/Re won their first match, 8-2, over Daniel Isazza/Sergio Velez (East Tennessee State), but dropped a tough 9-8 (6) decision to Andy Juc/Bo Ladyman (Furman). The Tech pair of Corace/Corrado Tocci (Fr., Reggio Emlia, Italy) were eliminated by Guillermo Gomez/Kevin King (Georgia Tech), 8-5.
Saturday’s singles schedule includes Daciek playing seventh-seeded and 68th-ranked Jay Weinacker (NCSU) in a 8:30 a.m. match at UNC. Elsewhere, Re will battle Oscar Podlewski (Elon) at 8:30 a.m. at UNC, Jacques takes the court at Duke for an 8:30 a.m. match versus Davy Sum (Campbell), Delgado de Robles plays Daniel Knause (Furman) in a 10:30 a.m. contest also at Duke, Graber plays the No. 13 seed and 88th-ranked Gera Boyradchainsky (Clemson) on the UNC courts at 11 a.m. and Somen will face the tournament’s second seed and 24th-ranked Cory Parr (Wake Forest) at noon on the Tar Heel courts.

The event features almost 200 of the best players in the region competing to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships next month in Charlottesville, Va. The two singles finalists and the doubles champion from the regional will automatically qualify for the national championship. The Mideast Regional, scheduled to continue through Oct. 21, is being played at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the University of North Carolina campus and at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center at Duke University.
