Three Hokies advance at Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional
Main draws begins Friday

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Virginia Tech had three singles players and one doubles team win qualifying matches Thursday to advance into the main draw at the Wilson/ITA Mideast Region Championships. Brandon Corace, Patrick Daciek and Luka Somen each picked up two victories to move into Friday’s main draw as did the doubles team of Corace/Corrado Tocci .

Daciek (Fr., Severna Park, Md.) defeated Chris Reiman (Florida State), 6-1, 6-2, in his first match before cruising past Philip Nemec (Elon), 6-2, 6-2. Corace (Sr., Naples, Fla.) beat Andre Bubnov (UNC Greensboro), 7-5, 6-1, Thursday morning, then eased past Plaman Tzvetkov (Coastal Carolina), 6-2, 6-2. Luka Somen (Fr., Karlovac, Croatia) picked up a tough, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, win over Joost Vogel (Wake Forest), then ousted Alex Rafiee (UNC), 6-3, 6-3. Corrado Tocci (Fr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) was eliminated with a 6-4, 7-5, decision versus Zach Watson (Radford).

In doubles, Corace/Corrado defeated Ike Belk/Robert Pietrucha (Clemson), 8-4, then took out Cameron Ahari/ Alex Rafiee (UNC), 8-3.

Four Tech players, Nicolas Delgado de Robles (Sr., Madrid, Spain), Sebastien Jacques (So., Magog, Quebec, Canada), Yoann Re (Jr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) and Pedro Graber (Jr., Santiago, Chile) have already been selected to participate in the main draw with only Graber to see action on Friday, as well as the doubles teams of Delgado/Somen, Jacques/Re and Daciek/Graber along with Corace/Corrado. Delgado (8), Re (17) and Jacques (24) are all seeded and received first round byes and will not see their first action until Saturday.

Friday’s single schedule has Daciek playing Luke Mojica (UNC) at 8:30 a.m. at UNC, Corace facing Andy Juc (Furman) also at 8:30 a.m. at Duke, Graber has an 11 a.m. contest versus Brennan Boyajian (UNC) at UNC and Somen takes on David Kwon (Maryland) at 11:30 a.m. at Duke. Only one round of singles will be played on Friday.

The main draw doubles pairings will be available following the completion Thursday’s two qualifying rounds and can be accessed at http://tennislink.usta.com/Tournaments/TournamentHome/Tournament.aspx?T=77773. There will be two rounds of doubles play on Friday.

The event features almost 200 of the best players in the region competing to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships next month in Charlottesville, Va. The two singles finalists and the doubles champion from the regional will automatically qualify for the national championship. The Mideast Regional, scheduled to continue through Oct. 21, is being played at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the University of North Carolina campus and at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center at Duke University.
