BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Four members of the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will see action in qualifying singles matches Thursday at the Wilson/ITA Mideast Region Championships. The event features almost 200 of the best players in the region competing to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships next month in Charlottesville, Va. The two singles finalists and the doubles champion from the regional will automatically qualify for the national championship. The Mideast Regional, scheduled to continue through Oct. 21, is being played at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the University of North Carolina campus and at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center at Duke University.
Tech’s Patrick Daciek (Fr., Severna Park, Md.) will face Chris Reiman (Florida State) at 8:30 a.m. at UNC while Brandon Corace (Sr., Naples, Fla.) faces Andre Bubnov (UNC Greensboro) in a 9:30 a.m. contest at Duke. Luka Somen (Fr., Karlovac, Croatia) takes on Joost Vogel (Wake Forest) at UNC in a 10:30 a.m. match and Corrado Tocci (Fr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) battles Zach Watson (school unknown) at 11:30 a.m. at UNC, Corace/Corrado will also see action in qualifying doubles, however opponents, match times location have yet to be determined. Thursday action will include two rounds of both singles and doubles with winners advancing into Friday’s main draw of the event.
Four Tech players, Nicolas Delgado de Robles (Sr., Madrid, Spain), Sebastien Jacques (So., Magog, Quebec, Canada), Yoann Re (Jr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) and Pedro Graber (Jr., Santiago, Chile) have already been selected to participate in the main draw and will not see action until Friday, as well as the doubles teams of Delgado/Somen, Jacques/Re and Daciek/Graber. The main draw pairings will be available following the completion of the two qualifying rounds in singles and doubles.
