Brizendine, Hokies announce 2018 schedule

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team will look to continue its fantastic run of form in 2018 under 10th year head coach Mike Brizendine, who has guided the Hokies to consecutive trips to the NCAA Championships.

Tech compiled an 8-8 record during the regular season in 2017 and defeated NC State in the ACC tournament to essentially clinch a spot in the NCAA’s. In that competition, the Hokies hosted Air Force in the First Round and defeated the Falcons 2-0 thanks to goals from seniors Marcelo Acuna and Collin Verfurth.

In the Second Round Tech’s season came to an end in East Lansing, Michigan, as Tech fell 3-0 to No. 7 Michigan State.

Brizendine’s squad will have to replace a large senior class departing Virginia Tech after graduation weekend. Included in that group are First Team All-ACC performers, Ben Lundgaard and Acuna.

The Hokies, who advanced into the Second Round of the NCAA Championships in 2017, and danced all the way to the Elite Eight in 2016 will face another challenging slate this fall, when they matchup against seven teams that were included in the field for the 2017 NCAA tournament.

Tech will kick off its season on the campus of James Madison where they will compete in the JMU Invitational for the second consecutive season. On August 24, the Hokies will meet Air Force, who they eliminated in the First Round of the NCAA’s at home in 2017 and then will take on Gardner-Webb on Sunday, Aug. 26.

In the following week, the Hokies will head south to Florida for two games in the Sunshine State against South Florida and UCF.

Tech’s home opponents will be; Wake Forest, Longwood, Syracuse, South Carolina, Pittsburgh, William & Mary and Duke.

The Hokies’ ACC opponents include the Demon Deacons, Orange, Panthers, Blue Devils as well as trips to NC State, North Carolina and in-state rival Virginia. Last season the league produced nine NCAA teams.

All Virginia Tech home games will be played at Thompson Field, where admission is free.
