Pair of Hokies heading to MLS Combine

BLACKSBURG – The 2018 MLS Combine is set to take place from Orlando City Stadium in Orlando, Florida beginning Thursday, Jan. 11. Two former Hokies will be in attendance, showing their skills against other top prospects.

First Team All-ACC performers Marcelo Acuna and Ben Lundgaard will travel to the Sunshine State for the week-long Combine where they will work to improve their draft stock in front of the league’s coaches and executives.

The pair were announced as a part of the initial 60 players invited to the Combine. A committee of MLS coaches and NCAA D1 coaches from every conference selected the invitees, all of whom completed their college eligibility this season.

In Orlando, Acuna and Lundgaard will be coached at the Combine by a mix of college soccer head coaches and MLS academy personnel.

In 2017, Acuna and Lundgaard led the Hokies to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament as captains during their senior season in Blacksburg.

Acuna, a forward from San Jose, Costa Rica scored 12 goals in 2017, including five game-winners. He scored a brace in three matches this season - all wins for the Hokies, including against Binghamton, then-No. 1 Notre Dame and Pitt.

For his career, Acuna scored 23 goals and recorded six assists in 42 appearances. Ten of his goals came in the game-winning variety.

Lundgaard, had 10 wins in goal and six shutouts, during the 2017 season. He helped the Hokies shutout then-No. 14 Creighton, Longwood, Boston College, Pitt, NC State in the ACC Tournament and Air Force in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. In the Hokies’ upset of top-ranked Notre Dame, Lundgaard recorded a career-high 10 saves.

On the season, Lundgaard had 108 saves, the most in the ACC.

The Greenville, Delaware native finished his career with 23 shutouts, the second most in program history.

MLS SuperDraft information - The 2018 MLS SuperDraft will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Friday, Jan. 19 from the the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
