Lundgaard, Acuna earn first-team All-ACC honors

BLACKSBURG – Marcelo Acuna and Ben Lundgaard have been named first-team All-ACC performers, the league office announced Tuesday. For Lundgaard, it is his first league honor, while Acuna was named second team in 2016.

Acuna, a senior from San Jose, Costa Rica, has 11 goals on the season to lead the Hokies, a mark good for second in the league. Five of his goals have been of the game-winning variety, including his second-half strike at Thompson Field, as the Hokies took down top-ranked Notre Dame.

Following the win over the Irish, Acuna was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week.

Acuna has tallied multi-goal games three times in 2017 — vs. Binghamton, No. 1 Notre Dame and in the regular-season finale at Pitt.

Lundgaard has tallied five shutouts in his senior season, bringing his career total to 22, the second-best mark in program history. His 91 saves rank first in the conference.

He shut out then-No. 14 Creighton on the opening night of the season, as well as Longwood and ACC foes Boston College, Pitt and NC State.

In the win over top-ranked Notre Dame on Sept. 22, Lundgaard tallied a career-high 10 saves.

This year marks the first time that two Hokies have been featured on the ACC first team.

Lundgaard, Acuna and the Hokies will be watching intently on Monday, Nov. 13 when the 48-team bracket for the 2017 NCAA Tournament is announced.

Tech boasts a fine resume, with a top-five schedule, a top-25 RPI and marquee wins over then-No. 14 Creighton on the opening day of the season and defeating then-No. 1 Notre Dame 2-1 at Thompson Field on Sept. 22, as well as defeating three other ACC teams.

Last season, the Hokies were included in the field, playing host to the first round and making a run all the way to the Elite Eight.
