RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team defeated NC State 1-0 in extra time from Dail Field in Raleigh Wednesday in the first round of the ACC Tournament.
Redshirt freshman forward Gaetan Roux’s first career goal in the second minute of extra time sent Tech into the second round after 90 minutes of scoreless action.
In regulation, the Hokies gained a hold of possession and looked the better side outshooting the Wolfpack 8-6 and earning three corner kicks. Jon Ingason, Elias Tamburini, Marcelo Acuna and Emil Koho all had shots turned away by the Pack defense and goalkeeper.
Just 80 seconds into the extra period, Koho picked a pass to the wing to Tamburini who swung in a cross that found that feet of Gaetan Roux. He settled himself and fired a left-footed effort to the far post beating keeper Leon Krapf.
Ben Lundgaard stood tall again for the Hokies recording four saves on the night for his second consecutive shutout, the fifth of the season for the senior.
Roux has made an impact for the Hokies since being inserted into the lineup in the last match against Pitt, registering an assist and he continued his good form Wednesday.
Up next: Tech will travel to Winston Salem, North Carolina for a matchup with No. 1 Wake Forest, the top seed in the competition. The game will be played on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
