Acuna, Moyers, defense earns Tech victory in regular season finale

The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team earned a vital three points on Friday night, defeating Pitt 3-0 at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Pitt and Tech were tied on points in the Coastal Division entering the match, the final one of the regular season. With the win, Tech (8-8, 3-5) earns the nine seed in the ACC Tournament, while Pitt (8-9, 2-6) falls to the 10 seed.

Marcelo Acuna got the Hokies on the board in the 22^nd minute when he headed home Gaetan Roux’s cross coming from a corner kick.

Acuna, a senior from San Jose, Costa Rica doubled the Hokies’ advantage in the 61^st minute when he picked up a ball near midfield and took on the Panthers’ defense. After skipping past a challenge, Acuna steadied himself and fired a bullet into the back of the net, his 11^th tally of the season matching his total from a year ago.

Brendan Moyers found the net for the first time in 2017, just four minutes later after a scramble in the box left the ball at his foot and he connected with a volley that hit the underside of the crossbar and fell behind the goal line.

Ben Lundgaard made four saves on the night, securing his fourth shutout of the season.

The Hokies kept constant pressure on the Pitt backline all night, taking 16 shots and earning a season-high 13 corners.

Up Next: Tech will travel to NC State on Wednesday, Nov. 1 for the First Round of the ACC Tournament. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen on ACC Network Extra.
