Hokies close out non-conference play with road test against William & Mary

BLACKSBURG –The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team is set to conclude its non-conference schedule on Wednesday when they take on the William & Mary Tribe at 7 p.m. The match can be viewed in some areas through Cox Communications.

The Hokies (7-6, 2-4)
Tech’s last time out resulted in a 3-0 loss to second-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Saturday night.

The Hokies are led by a trio of senior captains; Marcelo Acuna, Ben Lundgaard and Collin Verfurth.

Acuna leads the Hokies and is near the top of the conference in goals (8) and game-winning goals (4). Lundgaard’s senior campaign includes three shutouts and an ACC-best 72 saves. Verfurth is in the midst of his best scoring season yet, tallying three goals.

The Tribe (7-4-3, 3-2-2 CAA)
William & Mary is in the midst of a three-game winning streak and have gone four games unbeaten. On Saturday, the Tribe earned a 2-0 conference victory over Hofstra. Mercel Berry and Antonio Bustamante each found the back of the net, while Phil Breno kept a clean sheet making three saves.

On the season, Bustamante leads the Tribe with 16 points through six goals and four assists. Ryder Bell and William Eskay each have 10 or more points. Breno has played every minute in goal for the Tribe and owns six shutouts.

William & Mary owns a 4-1-2 record playing at home on Albert-Daly Field at Martin Family Stadium.

The Series
The Hokies and Tribe have met a total of 13 times dating back to the first meeting in 1979. Tech trails the all-time series 3-8-2, though are undefeated in the last five matches. The two programs most recently met in 2007, a 1-1 tie in Williamsburg.

The last time Tech took on a team from the CAA was during the 2016 season when the Hokies defeated Delaware 2-0. Verfurth found the back of the net from a crone

Tech will be honoring 10 seniors and two student trainers for their contributions to the program prior to the match.
