Hokies hit the road to take on No. 2 Demon Deacons

Tech looks for another result against a top-five opponent this season

BLACKSBURG –The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team is set to take on the second-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons from Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Saturday, Oct 14th at 7:30 p.m. The match can be viewed on ACC Network Extra.

The Hokies (7-5, 2-3)
Tech’s five-game winning streak was halted this past Friday night against No. 7 Louisville at Thompson Field. The Cardinals scored in the 77th minute when a cross from the right wing deflected off a Hokie and into the back of the net.

Ben Lundgaard made six saves in the game, and continues to lead the conference in saves. The senior also has three shutouts on the year, 20 for his career and continues to close in on the program record of 24 in a career set by Chase Harrison.

Marcelo Acuna continues to lead the Hokies in the attacking third, leading the team with eight goals and 18 points. His four game-winning goals are the most in the conference.

Kristo Strickler’s fine freshman season continues as he is second in points for Tech with seven and went three straight games registering a point. Two of his three goals have come in the game-winning variety in 2017.

Tech looks to knock off another top-five opponent after defeating top-ranked Notre Dame 2-1 earlier this season at Thompson Field.

Last season the Hokies defeated multiple top-10 opponents for the first time since the 2003 season.

The Demon Deacons (12-1, 5-0)
Last time out, Wake Forest bagged eight goals in a 8-0 win over Longwood, the team’s ninth straight victory. Forward Jon Bakero lead seven goal scorers with two, and Luis Argudo provided three assists.

Bakero leads the Deacons with 30 points on the season (nine goals, 12 assists), while four other players have 10 or more points in 2017.

Andrew Cases Mundet has four shutouts in goals for the Deacons, and the team has five overall in 2017.

Wake Forest has played well at Spry Stadium, as they own an 8-1 record on the season and have outscored opponents 29-7.

The Series
The series between Virginia Tech and Wake Forest dates all the way back to 1980. Wake Forest owns a 17-3-2 record all-time. In their last meeting last season, the Deacons shut out Tech for a 2-0 victory in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The Hokies’ latest triumph in the series was a 2-0 victory in 2014.
