Hokies take to Thompson Field for contest Friday night
Men's soccer to take part in first Commonwealth Clash event of the year

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team makes its 2017 debut at Thompson Field on Friday, Sept. 15 for a 7 p.m. kickoff against the 12th ranked Virginia Cavaliers. The game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
Virginia (4-0-1) enters the match undefeated to start their season, after wins against Villanova, Hofstra, UNC Wilmington and Marquette, with the one draw coming against Syracuse. Three UVA matches have gone into overtime already in 2017,
Sergi Nus leads the Cavaliers in goals with three on the season. Pablo Aguilar and Edward Opoku both have netted two goals on the season and Jeff Caldwell owns two shutouts in goal for the Cavaliers.
Last time on the pitch, the Hokies lost their ACC opener to Duke 3-1 on the road. Ben Lundgaard made eight saves and Verfurth scored his second headed goal of the season in the contest.
Marcelo Acuna leads the way with three goals on the season, and Collin Verfurth has scored two goals on the season. Lundgaard has 28 saves on the season, which leads the conference, and one shutout.
The game will be the first contest of the 2017-2018 Commonwealth Clash, an annual competition between the athletic departments of Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia. Last season, Tech took home the Clash.
Next up
Virginia Tech will host Davidson at Thompson Field on Tuesday, Sept. 19th at 7 p.m. The matchup will be the eighth in series history, with each school owning three wins and a draw.
