Hokies get set for final exhibition against Clemson

BLACKSBURG- The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team is preparing to host the Clemson Tigers at 7 p.m. Saturday night at Thompson field. The match will be the team’s final exhibition before opening up regular season play on Aug. 25.

The Hokies got their first 90 minutes of work under their belt Tuesday evening at ETSU. Marcelo Acuna’s strike from the top of the box in the 53rd minute was the difference between the two sides. Ben Lundgaard recorded eight saves in goal, keeping a clean sheet. Lundgaard, Jon Ingason and Elias Tamburini went the full 90 for the Hokies’ squad which utilized 19 players on the pitch.

Clemson comes into the game having already played two matches in preseason. The fifth-ranked Tigers defeated UAB 3-0 on Aug. 12 and the nineteenth-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 3-1 this past Tuesday night. Five different players have scored Clemson’s six goals throughout the preseason.

The match will be Tech’s first chance to test the pitch at Thompson Field. Last season, the Hokies enjoyed their soccer on the natural grass surface, going 7-1-2. The Hokies do not get another opportunity at home until Friday, Sept. 15 when they host the Virginia Cavaliers.
