Hokies announce 2017 spring schedule
Brizendine's squad to play seven games in March and April
February 24, 2017
BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech head men’s soccer coach Michael Brizendine has announced the Hokies’ 2017 spring schedule, which includes four games at home.
Tech will face High Point at 1 p.m. and VCU at 4 p.m. on campus on March 25 before travelling to Clemson, South Carolina, to take on ACC foe Clemson on April 1 at 1 p.m. The Hokies will return home to take on Winthrop at 1 p.m. and Louisburg at 4 p.m. on April 9.
The team will close out the spring with two teams they faced during the 2016 season, first taking on UVA in Charlottesville at 11:30 a.m on April 15. On April 21, the Hokies head to Johnson City, Tennessee, to face East Tennessee State for the third time since August at 7 p.m.
“With the group that we have returning, we knew we needed a good spring slate to push us towards our fall goals,” said Brizendine. “I think we've accomplished this with the teams that we're facing. I think everyone on our team will get an opportunity to see good minutes so we'll have a good idea of what everyone can bring to our fall campaign.”
The Hokies are coming off a 13-win season and a berth to the NCAA Elite Eight. VT posted a program-best nine shutouts, finishing the season ranked No. 8 in the NSCAA Poll, and No. 11 in the RPI. It was the first time the Hokies appeared in the NCAA tournament since 2007, a season that earned Brizendine VaSID Coach of the Year honors and Marcelo Acuna a place on the NSCAA All-America third team.
Looking towards 2017, the Hokies are returning nine starters. A talented freshman class will return after netting nine goals this season. With a strong signing class, Tech will add some depth to the already talented roster.
