Acuna earns NSCAA All-American honors

BLACKSBURG- Marcelo Acuna, a first-year member of the Virginia Tech men’s soccer team, was awarded 2016 NSCAA NCAA Division I Men’s All-America Third Team honors on Friday.

The forward started all 22 games for the Hokies this season, playing a total of 1717 minutes for Tech. Acuna lead the team in goals (11), points (25), game winning goals (5), shots (94) and shots on goal (41).

Acuna’s notable goals include the game winner against No. 18 Ohio State, a hat trick against VMI and tallying two goals against tenth-seeded Charlotte in the NCAA Tournament.

The Costa Rican native was an offense spark all season for the Hokies. Him and his teammates were able to finish the year out at 13-5-4, tallying a program-high nine shutouts. Tech enjoyed their first NCAA Tournament berth in nine years.

The junior was named to the All-ACC Second Team and NSCAA All-South Region First Team earlier this season. Acuna was the ACC Offensive Player of the Week twice and the Virginia Tech Student Athlete of the Week three times.

Acuna and the Hokies ended their season last Saturday in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
