No. 15 Hokies travel to No. 10 Syracuse
Tech looks for first ACC win on the road

BLACKSBURG- The No. 15 Virginia Tech men’s soccer team travels to Syracuse University for an ACC clash Friday at the Orange’s SU Soccer Stadium. The match is set for 7 p.m. The clash will be aired on the ACC Digital Network Extra via the Watch ESPN App.

Tech hosted Wright State on Tuesday where the teams went the full 110 minutes to end in a 1-1 draw. This draw left the Hokies at 9-2-2 on the season and 7-0-1 in non-conference play. Freshman Brendan Moyers was the lone goal scorer. It was also Moyers’ first collegiate goal. VT now has 13 different goal scorers.

At third in the ACC Costal Division, Virginia Tech is 2-2-1 in the ACC. The team is currently second for shots and saves in the conference as well as tied for second in points, goals and goals per game. This week, Marcelo Acuna was named ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week, his second weekly honor. Acuna leads the ACC in shots while in second for game winning goals. Tech moved to No. 19 in this week’s NCAA RPI rating. The team is currently ranked ninth in the country for scoring offenses, fifth for total goals, and tenth for win-lose-tie percentage.

Scouting the Orange

Syracuse comes off a midweek break, not having a Tuesday match. The Orange suffered a 1-0 ACC loss to Louisville last week. That and Notre Dame are their only conference losses. SU sits at fourth in the ACC Atlantic Division with conference wins against Boston College and NC State. Their ACC record is 2-2-1. The team did not place in the top five of any category of the ACC ranks except third for fouls. While No. 10 in the NSCAA Coaches’ Poll, the Orange are No. 8 in this week’s NCAA RPI. Their player to watch is Chris Nanco. Nanco leads the team in goals with four on the season.

The Last Meeting

These two ACC teams have meet only five times before. Dating back to 2001, the Hokies lead all-time 4-1. Syracuse got their only win of the series the last time they met in 2014. The Orange traveled to Blacksburg where they handed the Hokies a double overtime loss.
