BLACKSBURG- The No. 15 Virginia Tech men’s soccer team (4-1-0) hosts the Longwood Lancers (2-1-1) on Tuesday. The midweek clash is set for 7 p.m. on Thompson Field. Prior to the men’s game, the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will also play Longwood.
Tech returns home after facing No. 24 Georgetown and No. 1 Notre Dame on the road. The Hokies upset the Hoyas 1-0 to push them into the NSCAA rankings for the first time since 2008. Collin Verfurth scored the game winner in the 85th minute while Ben Lundgaard posted his third shutout of the season. Tech broke into the rankings at No. 15 leading up to their clash against the nation’s No. 1 Notre Dame. The game against the Fighting Irish marked the first ACC game and the Hokies first loss of the season. Tech managed to out shoot ND 15-14 but in the end it was not enough to win.
The Hokies had their best start to the season since 2006. VT continues to outshoot their opponents 74-47. Marcelo Acuna continues to lead the team in goals (4), points (8) and shots (20). Lundgaard has moved into fourth for the most career shutouts in Hokie history with 12.
Tuesday will be International Students Day at Thompson Field with free admission and pizza after the women’s match against Longwood at 4 p.m. and before the men’s at 7 p.m.
Scouting Longwood
The Lancers are looking to carry their momentum to Blacksburg after a 3-0 win at home against Newberry College. Longwood now has two shutouts against Newberry and VMI. Eight Lancers are tied at one goal a piece to lead the team in goals. They are currently outshooting their opponents 70-45. Longwood has now fouled 46 times and racked up eight yellow cards. Mo Jalloh is a player to watch, starting all four games, tallying one goal and one assist and taking 15 shots.
The Last Meeting
The Hokies and the Lancers last met in 2014 on Thompson field where the Hokies were victorious. Tech won 4-1. Their all-time series is tied at 4-2-4 with the first meeting dating back to 1982. Under head coach Mike Brizendine, Virginia Tech is 3-1-1 over Longwood.
