BLACKSBURG- The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team returned to the NSCAA rankings this week for the first time since 2008. The Hokies are sitting at No. 15 after starting the season 4-0-0.
The Hokies are tabbed second in the ACC Coastal Division only behind No. 1 Notre Dame. Marcelo Acuna and Ben Lundgaard were named ACC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for week one of the 2016 season.
Tech has now taken down two ranked opponents on the road in No. 18 Ohio State and No. 24 Georgetown. Acuna lifted the Hokies to a 1-0 double overtime victory over the Buckeyes while Collin Verfurth has a difference maker in the 1-0 upset against the Hoyas. The other wins this season came from Oakland in Columbus where three Hokies scored and a dominating 4-1 win over South Florida at home.
This marks the first time Virginia Tech men’s soccer has been ranked since the week of Sept. 14, 2008. Tech was No. 22 before falling out of the polls.
The Hokies travel to No. 1 Notre Dame on Friday to open ACC play. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
