WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team (4-0-0) upset No. 24 Georgetown University (0-4-0) on Monday 1-0. The single goal from Collin Verfurth lifted Tech to their fourth win of the 2016 season.
The Hokies started the first half strong, controlling the ball early against the Hoyas. Georgetown stuck first, taking five shots in the first 45 minutes. Tech ended the very physical, quick tempo half with two shots. Hokie Rory Slevin was the driving force behind holding the Hoyas scoreless with his aggressive defense.
The game only continued to become more physically demanding as the quick tempo carried over. During the first ten minutes, the Hoyas added four shots and the Hokies adding one. During the 84th minutes, Collin Verfurth scored the first goal of the game off a volley from the deep end line. The assist was credited to JP Saavedra. Ben Lundgaard tallied his twelfth career shutout with six saves.
The Hokies play again on Friday as they travel to Notre Dame to open ACC play. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in South Bend, Ind.
